Blinking Lights
The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are blinking
In this error condition , all of the control panel lights are blinking:
  • Power light : Blinking
  • Attention light : Blinking
  • Check color cartridge light : Blinking
  • Check black cartridge light : Blinking

  • Cause
    The product is in an error state.
Solutions
Solution one: Reset the All-in-One
Follow these steps
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Plug the All-in-One directly into an electrical outlet
Plug the product directly into an electrical outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
  3. Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  5. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  6. Try the task again.
    If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Service the All-in-One
If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.
Issue: One or both Check Cartridge lights are on
In this error condition , the following control panel light pattern displays:
  • Power light : On
  • Attention light : Off
  • Check color cartridge light : On or off
  • Check black cartridge light : On or off

If both check cartridge lights are on, there is an issue with both cartridges. If the left check cartridge light is on, there is an issue with the tri-color cartridge.
  • Cause
    The indicated cartridge is low on ink.
Solutions
If one (or both) of the cartridges is low on ink, you do not need to replace the cartridges yet, unless you are dissatisfied with the print quality.
Solution one: Check the ink levels
Follow these steps to check the ink levels.
  1. Open the HP product software:
    • Windows XP
      Click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ( ).
    • Windows Vista
      Click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ( ).
    • Windows 7
      Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ( ).

    NOTE: You can also open the HP product software from your computer desktop by double-clicking the icon for your HP product ( ).
    The product software opens.
  2. In the product software, double-click Estimated Ink Levels ( ).
    The HP Toolbox opens a graphic that shows the estimated ink levels for your product.

  3. If the estimated ink levels are low, and you are satisfied with the quality of your printouts, ignore the light(s) until you are dissatisfied with the printouts.
    If the estimated ink levels are low, and you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, replace the cartridges. Continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge
Follow these steps in the order given to replace the cartridge(s).

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.
    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not retape the cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
    • The tri-color cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the left
    • The black cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the right

  6. Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.
  7. Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
  8. Close the cartridge access door.

  9. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display ( ).
    The product prints an alignment page.
Step two: Align the cartridges
  1. Lift the scanner lid.
  2. Place the alignment page with the printed-side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.

  3. Close the scanner lid.
  4. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display ( ).
    The product scans the alignment page.
  5. When the Alignment successful message displays on the control panel screen, press the button next to OK on the control panel display ( ) to complete the alignment.
Step three: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.

Setup
  1. Press the button next to Setup on the product control panel ( ).
  2. Press the button next to Printer Report on the product control panel ( ).
    The self-test report prints.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
  • If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution three: Service the All-in-One

Issue: One or both Check Cartridge lights are blinking
In this error condition , the following control panel light pattern displays:
  • Power light : On
  • Attention light : Off
  • Check color cartridge light : Blinking or off

If both check cartridge lights are blinking, there is an issue with both cartridges. If the left check cartridge light is blinking, there is an issue with the tri-color cartridge.
  • Causes
    • One or both cartridges are incompatible with the product.
    • One or both cartridges are defective.
    • One or both cartridges still have the protective tape on the nozzles.
    • A problem has occurred with one or both cartridges.

Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your product.

  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before proceeding.
  3. Find the number on the label on the top of each cartridge.

  4. Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the cartridge access door.
  5. Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.
    For instructions on how to replace the cartridges, skip to the solution to replace the cartridges.
Solution two: Resolve the cartridge problem
Follow these steps in the order given to resolve the cartridge problem.
Step one: Clean the problem cartridge contacts
Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts.

NOTE: If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the center of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  4. Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. If protective tape is still on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.

    If you removed the protective tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge.
  6. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up.
  7. Dip a cotton swab into the clean distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
  8. Clean the cartridge contacts.
    CAUTION: Avoid touching the nozzles.

    NOTE: Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside the product for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the product for too long.
  9. Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge.
    WARNING: Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the product.

  10. Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge and carriage to dry.
  11. Place the cartridge in its slot at a slightly upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.
    • The tri-color cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the left.
    • The black cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the right.

  12. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  13. Close the cartridge access door.

  14. Press the button next to OK on the control panel display ( ).
    The product prints an alignment page.
Step two: Align the cartridges
  1. Lift the scanner lid.

  • Cause
    • The carriage inside the product stalled.
Solutions
Solution one: Clear any jammed paper
Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.
Experiencing frequent or recurring paper jams?
Preventing paper jams
The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.
  • Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
  • Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.
    CAUTION: Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
  • Do not overload the tray with paper.
  • Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
  • Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
  • Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
  • Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
  • Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
  • Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.
Causes of paper jams
The following factors can cause paper jams:
  • Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
  • Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
  • Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
  • The rear access door or two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) might not be closed or is not locked into place.
  • Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
  • The tray contains more than one type of paper.
  • The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
  • An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
  • Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
  • The tray is too full.
  • If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.
Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the base of the All-in-One
Use the following steps to check for and then remove jammed paper from the base of the HP product.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  4. Turn the product so that you can access its underside (base).
  5. Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to open it.

  6. Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the product.

    CAUTION: If the paper tears while removing it, check inside the door for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  7. Reattach the cleanout door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.

  8. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  9. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step three: Clear the jam from inside the All-in-One
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Open the cartridge access door.

  4. Gently remove any paper that is jammed inside the product.

  5. Close the cartridge access door.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step four: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One
If you cannot remove the jam from the base or inside the product, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Grasp the jammed paper with both hands, and then slowly pull it from the front of the product.

    NOTE: If the paper tears while removing it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  5. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    WARNING: You must unplug the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
    CAUTION: If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur.
  5. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the product, and then to the right side.
  8. Close the cartridge access door.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  10. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

Solution three: Remove and then reinstall the cartridges
Improper placement or installation of the cartridges can cause the product to indicate a carriage jam error. Follow these steps to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges

  4. Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Clear any obstructions that you find. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.

  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.

  • Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
  • Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.
    CAUTION: Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
  • Do not overload the tray with paper.
  • Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
  • Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
  • Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
  • Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
  • Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
  • Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.
Causes of paper jams
The following factors can cause paper jams:
  • Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
  • Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
  • Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
  • The rear access door or two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) might not be closed or is not locked into place.
  • Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
  • The tray contains more than one type of paper.
  • The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
  • An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
  • Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
  • The tray is too full.
  • If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.
Step one: Remove any loose paper

CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the base of the All-in-One
Use the following steps to check for and remove jammed paper from the base of the HP product.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  4. Turn the product so that you can access its underside (base).
  5. Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to open it.

  4. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
    CAUTION: If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur.
  5. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the product, and then to the right side.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    WARNING: You must unplug the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
    CAUTION: If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur.
  5. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the product, and then to the right side.
  8. Close the cartridge access door.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  10. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

Solution five: Remove and then reinstall the cartridges
Improper placement or installation of the cartridges can cause the product to indicate a carriage jam error. Follow these steps to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if the power is not already on. Wait until the product is idle and silent before proceeding.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

    CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.
  5. Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Clear any obstructions you find. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
Follow these steps to reinstall the cartridges. Repeat the steps for each cartridge.
  1. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
    • The tri-color cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the left.
    • The black cartridge ( ) goes in the slot on the right.

  2. Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.

  3. Repeat these steps to reinstall the other cartridge.
  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  6. Try the task again.
    If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution one: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in
Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the product and plugged into an electrical outlet.
  1. Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
  2. Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.
  3. Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.

  4. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  • If the product turns on , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the product does not turn on , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Make sure that the electrical outlet works
  1. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  2. Plug another appliance into the electrical outlet to make sure that the outlet works.
  • If the electrical outlet does not work , plug the product into another outlet that does work.
  • If the electrical outlet works, but the product still does not turn on , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Make sure that the power supply is compatible with the HP All-in-One
The term power supply refers to both the power module and the power cord.

NOTE: To make sure that your product and power supply are compatible, HP suggests you use the original power supply shipped with your product.

NOTE: The power module might have a permanently attached power cord, or the power cord might detach from the power module.The photographs in the examples above might not match your product.
  1. Make sure that the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the power supply match the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the HP product.

    In this example, the voltage (+32 V) and the amperage (2000 mA) from the power supply are compatible with the voltage and amperage specified on the HP product.
  2. If the voltage and amperage specifications of the product and the power supply are compatible, make sure that the connector on the power cord is the same shape and size as the connector on the HP product.
    WARNING: Do not force an incompatible power cord (its plug has a different shape or size than the HP product's electrical connection) into an HP product.
    • If the power cord is not compatible with the product, replace the power cord with a compatible cord. To buy a compatible cord, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window .
    • If the power cord is compatible with the product, but the product still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power
The power module has a safety feature that protects the product during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, you might need to reset the power module. Follow these steps to reset the power module.
Step one: Reset the power module
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the power module.
  4. Wait 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the power module.
  7. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector until after the issue is resolved.

  8. Check to see if the power module has an LED light.
  • If the power module does not have an LED light , continue to the next step.
  • If the power module has an LED light , check to see if the LED lights up.
  • If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window .
  • If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.
Step two: Test the power on the All-in-One
Follow these steps to test the power on the product.
  1. Press, and then quickly release the Power button ( ) to start a Power On/Off cycle. Do not hold the button down.
    If you press and hold the Power button too long, the product might turn on and then turn off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button ( ) again.
  2. Check the product to make sure that it has turned on.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different product
If you have another available power cord that is compatible with your product, use the alternate cord and repeat the steps in the solution to reset the power module and then test the power.
  • If the product turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , to buy a compatible power cord.
  • If the product does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.
